YouYou est le nom français pour ce qu’on appelle en arabe Zaghareed. Il s'agit d’un ancien folklore vocal qui trouve ses racines en Afrique du Nord et subsaharienne, au Moyen-Orient et même au Pays basque. Il s'agit d'une technique par laquelle les femmes produisent une voix aiguë et tremblante en faisant vibrer leur gorge ou en bougeant leur langue. De cette manière, elles peuvent exprimer des émotions intenses, comme la joie ou la tristesse, de manière forte et puissante. Depuis des années, l'artiste sonore Myriam Van Imschoot est fascinée par l'impact du "YouYouYou". Elle développe des projets artistiques avec des interprètes locaux, où le respect de la tradition et l’ouverture à de nouvelles interprétations coexistent. C'est ainsi que le groupe YouYou a vu le jour à Bruxelles.  

 

Segen est une nouvelle création vocale du YouYou Groupe, a capella et sans amplification. Il s'agit d'une invitation à écouter un lieu, en l'occurrence une rue. Comment les particularités acoustiques et sonores de ce lieu sont-elles déterminées par l'architecture, l'histoire urbaine et la réalité sociale ? Comment un morceau de musique, par sa forme et son intention, peut-il simultanément révéler et transformer un lieu ? Quatre interprètes venant d'horizons différents se rapprochent lentement pour finir par former un "quatuor avec une mission".

Youyou is het Franse woord voor wat in het Arabisch Zaghareed heet. Dat is een oeroud vocaal gebruik met wortels in Noord- en Sub-Sahara-Afrika, het Midden-Oosten en zelfs het Baskenland. Het gaat om een techniek waarbij vrouwen door vibraties van de keelwand of door het bewegen van de tong een hoge trillende stem produceren. Zo kunnen ze luid en krachtig intense emoties uiten, zoals vreugde of verdriet. Geluidskunstenares Myriam Van Imschoot is al jaren gefascineerd door de impact van de youyou-kreet. Ze ontwikkelt artistieke projecten met lokale performers, waarbij er zowel respect voor traditie als openheid naar nieuwe invullingen is. Op die manier kwam de Brusselse YouYou Groep tot stand.  

 

Segen is een nieuw vocaal werk van de YouYou Groep, a capella en zonder versterking. Het is een uitnodiging om te luisteren naar een plek, in dit geval een straat. Hoe worden de akoestische en andere sonore bijzonderheden van die plek bepaald door architectuur, stedelijke geschiedenis en sociale realiteit? Hoe kan een muziekstuk door zijn vorm en intentie een plek tegelijkertijd onthullen en transformeren? Vier performers komen uit verschillende richten langzaam dichter bij elkaar om uiteindelijk een ‘kwartet met een missie’ te vormen.

Youyou is the French word for what in Arabic is called Zaghareed. This is an ancient vocal tradition with roots in North and Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and even the Basque Country. It is a technique whereby women produce a high-pitched trembling voice by vibrating the throat or moving the tongue. In this way, they can express intense emotions, such as joy or sorrow, loudly and powerfully. For years, sound artist Myriam Van Imschoot has been fascinated by the impact of the youyou sound. She develops artistic projects with local performers, where there is both respect for tradition and openness to new interpretations. This is how the Brussels YouYou group came into being. 

 

Segen is a new vocal work by the YouYou Group, a cappella and without amplification. It is developed as an invitation for listening to the acoustic and other sonic specificities of a place determined by architecture, urban histories and social life. How can a musical piece, by its very form and intention, reveal and transform the space at the same time as if it were a blessing in disguise? Four performers come from all wind directions to assemble with a mission.
